Absolut – Teacup – Storm ?

Saw a report on CNN today about a consumer backlash in the USA brought on by an advert that the Absolut vodka company produced for the Mexican market. In the ad a map is shown depicting the amount of land which was claimed by Mexico back in the 1830s which included a huge chunk of what is now the South West USA with the slogan “In an Absolut World”.

The size of the area claimed surprised me as did a quote from a talking head who claimed that a number of illegal immigrants felt justified in coming to those areas as they felt that the land should still belong to Mexico.

It did cause me to do some research on the events of the Mexican American war of 1848 of which I was previously ignorant.

Calls are being made to boycott the product because of the advert – I feel the fact that the Swedish company is about to be bought out the French firm Pernod Ricard might be a better reason for US consumers to avoid it.

Here is an article from the LA Times which features the map in question – US readers might not want to go there if they are easily offended or suffer from heart conditions.

Saw it.

What a pisser.

It's disturbing; plus, you never know what will incite crazy people to do nutty things.

I'm too tired to rant about it, but I've lived, ever briefly, in Los Angeles. It's crazy. My best friend lives in a southern part of Texas and she is speechless sometimes, because she can't use English and be understood...in her own country.

I'm just tired of the overall illegal immigration problem, no matter where the illegal aliens are from. It is a drain on our resources.

HERE's and example.

rt, What surprised me was how far North the Spanish claimed territory was on the West coast.

Most people would think that as an island it would be easy for the UK to control illegal immigration - but it sure as hell is not with our total lack of exit controls the gov have no idea who is in the country.

Land borders are even trickier to police as all the film of people exiting Zimbabwe to SA under the razor wire fence have shown recently.

Vodka drinkers are plain crazy anyway - why worry about them?

Noddy Very true - why else would they be drinking a spirit which has no taste unless you mix it with something else.

Give me a good malt any day.

Thanks for the heads up - I won't go see that map then. What is terribly ironic here is that, had those lands remained in Mexico's hands, there would be no economic incentive for the illegals to swarm there. Living in a 3rd world California would not be a vast improvement over staying put. And we would be going there for cheap vacations and tequila.

If you find this regional history interesting, you might go over via my Fat Hairy link and read one of his latest history lessons. Quite good.

Lin, thanks for the tip, finally made it over to FHB's place today and was suitably further enlightened on regional history.
