Don't Panic

A giant cloud of hydrogen gas is heading for a collision with the Milky Way! It is moving at a speed of 150 miles per second.

Fear not though, it will not hit us for 20 to 40 million years, phew what a relief. Read the full story here.

Relief, indeed. 20-40 million years? Close call!

Phlegmmy, I always think twice when reading this sort of thing, what if the decimal point got moved the wrong way during the calculations?

Console myself with the thought that if it had, it would be all over for us before anyone realised it.

Phew. And there I was, ready to go out at night and shake a bed sheet at the heavens to ward it off. (Don't know if that would help, but it coudn't hurt.)
I wonder if these people who "discovered" and then made predictions about this got their educations at the same places our local weather forecasters did? If so, then don't worry about it. I can still remember a forecaster telling us that it was a bright, sunny day and we should be outside enjoying it. Meanwhile, we were having a gully washer of a storm.

Well, if something catastrophically nasty is unavoidable, there's something to be said for expiring before you've noticed it's happened, I suppose. :P

Well, darn. I was making plans for an "end-of-the-world" party and now I'll have to wait millions of years.

Cat, I hate it when the forecast does not turn out as advertised, went to a cricket match last August, prediction was for a warm sunny day and it was overcast and we shivered in the stands.

Phlegmmy and rt, You ladies are up pretty late on a Saturday night/Sunday morning - party on dudes.
