“Dead” Man Reappears

This story has all of our meeja in a spin at the moment, in summary he disappeared while canoeing in the North Sea five years ago and was declared dead one year later.

On Saturday he walks into a police station in London and states that they might be looking for him as a missing person, he claims to have no memory of the last seven years.

It then emerges that his wife sold their two houses six weeks ago and has migrated to Panama, then a photograph of him and his wife taken one year ago in Panama appears in the press over here.

He was arrested yesterday and is being questioned by the police, meanwhile his wife has disappeared from her luxury apartment and is believed to be staying under warps at the expense of one of our tabloid newspapers.

No doubt the full story will eventually emerge but the people I feel sorry for are their two sons who have spent the last five years believing that their father had drowned.

As an aside, I had no idea Panama was such a fine place to escape to, low cost of living, no tax liable on your overseas investments and a great climate. If I spoke Spanish I would seriously be considering selling up here and retiring down there.

I've heard of a lot of Americans recently settling in Panama for their retirement years. Better than Mexico, they say.

But yeah, that does suck for the kids - what a terrible thing for them to go through - sounds like both parents were in on it, too? Creepy. Why are people so nasty?

Except me. I KNOW I'm nasty. But I'm good-nasty, not nasty-nasty.

Hopefully, both husband and wife will get what they deserve. I feel bad for the kids. It probably speaks volumes as to what the home might have been like when the children were growing up with them as parents.

Phlegmmy, of course you are good-nasty.

rt, latest news is that the wife is on a flight back to the UK and that she will be arrested at the airport.

Husband still being questioned by the police and will be held for another 72 hours.

If it was a scam - which it appears to be - you have to wonder why he came back at all. I mean it seems to me that the scam was working perfectly.

jt, One of the theories doing the rounds is that the wife sold their two properties in the UK six weeks ago and then returned to Panama.

On getting there she told him that he was not getting any money from her and he returned to spite her.

Ok. Then the question I have is..."Lady, your husband is declared dead, you get the money from the sale of the properties...why go where he is if you don't want to share?" DUH.

I've been hearing quite a bit about Panama as well. Go click on my or Phlegmmy's link to "The Atavist". He is involved in developing a community down there (it should be in his own links).

Just don't try to reach Panama by canoe through the North Sea.
